What Is the Difference Between Preapproval and Prequalification?

Both describe a lender’s preliminary willingness to lend under certain assumptions. Lenders use these terms differently, so ask what was actually checked and what conditions remain.
Look beyond the label
Some letters are based mainly on information you report. Others follow document and credit review. The title of the letter does not reliably tell you how much work the lender has completed.
Check what the letter means for your offer
Ask whether income, assets, and credit were reviewed, when the letter expires, and what could change the decision. Neither label by itself guarantees final financing.
| Ask the lender | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| What information was verified? | Shows the depth of the review |
| What conditions remain? | Clarifies what still needs approval |
| When must the letter be updated? | Keeps your offer documentation current |
