Should I rent first when I move or just buy?

Rent versus buy relocation comparison with job offer folder and keys

There is no single right answer; the better choice depends on your finances, timing, and what you want from the home. Renting first can reduce pressure when you do not know the area, while buying may make sense if the move is long-term and you already know where you want to live. Compare flexibility against the cost and effort of moving twice.

Plan the move and the real estate transaction together

Write out the move date, the date housing is needed in the new area, and the earliest realistic date the current home could be ready to list. Then identify whether money from the current sale is needed for the next purchase. Those dates and cash requirements determine whether selling first, buying first, arranging a coordinated closing, or using temporary housing is realistic.

When temporary housing can help

A short rental can reduce pressure when the job start date is firm but the purchase timeline is uncertain. It creates time to learn the area and sell the prior home, but it also adds another move, storage costs, lease terms, and the possibility that prices or interest rates change. Compare those costs with the risk of buying quickly.
