How Do I Know When We've Outgrown Our House?

Residential family living space

Outgrowing a home rarely happens overnight, it tends to show up as a series of small frictions that eventually add up to something undeniable.

Physical space signs

A common threshold is when a family of four is living in under 1,000-1,200 square feet, or when children who once shared a room comfortably now need separate space as they grow older. Storage strain, garages, closets, and attics packed beyond capacity, is often one of the first visible signs.

Lifestyle friction signs

Beyond square footage, signs include a lack of separate space for remote work and family life, a kitchen too small to function during regular meal prep with kids underfoot, or a single bathroom creating morning bottlenecks for a family of four or more.

Outdoor space considerations

A yard under roughly 2,000-3,000 square feet can start to feel restrictive once children are old enough to need active outdoor play space, particularly in urban and suburban San Fernando Valley neighborhoods where lot sizes vary significantly by area.

Distinguishing a real need from a temporary phase

Some space pressures are genuinely temporary, a newborn's gear takes up a lot of room but shrinks over time, while others tend to compound as kids grow, like the need for separate bedrooms or dedicated homework space. Separating which frictions will likely resolve on their own within a year or two from which will only intensify helps avoid moving prematurely for a phase that would have passed anyway.
